What is snorkelling, and how does it differ from scuba diving?

Snorkeling is an exciting way to explore what’s under the sea using special equipment to help you breathe. This is done using a breathing tube known as a snorkel, which has a piece of rubber or a plastic clip that attaches to the outside of a diving mask.

Unlike scuba diving, snorkelling involves swimming along the water’s surface and looking down at the activity in the ocean below. On the other hand, scuba diving requires a pressurised air tank as you dive deeper below the surface.

How to snorkel: Our top tips

If you’re a first-time snorkeller, you may be a bit unsure about what to expect. With that in mind, here are our top snorkeling tips:

Make sure you know how to fit your mask

Your snorkelling tour guide will be able to help you with this, but it’s important to make sure your mask fits properly so that it doesn’t leak when you’re taking in the sights of the sea.

Make sure your fins fit properly

Again, you’ll get help with this when you come to trying on your snorkelling gear, but you don’t want fins that are too loose, too tight or that hurt your feet. Your snorkelling experience should be comfortable; you don’t want to miss out on any of the amazing underwater wildlife because you’re worrying about your fins! Remember that a snug fit is essential, as you don’t want your fins to fall off.

Practice in a pool or shallow beach

Pick a calm area of water, such as a swimming pool, to practice your snorkelling skills. This will help you get to grips with your breathing technique and feel comfortable using the snorkel.

It’s okay to swim slowly when you’re snorkelling, as this will help you reserve energy. Swim at a comfortable pace and remember that your fins will make swimming much easier, so you should practice floating with minimal effort.
